Help Keep Suwannee Clean

The Suwannee River The Suwannee River offers plenty of excellent sights and fun activities. Unfortunately, it does become dirty as debris and trash from careless campers, drivers and others finds their way into it. That’s why we here at Suwannee River Rendezvous hold an event to help clean it up.

The sixth annual Great Suwannee River Basin Cleanup will take place Oct. 29, 2016, and offers a great opportunity for volunteers to join together to clean up the river that gives us so much. The event begins at 9 a.m. and all volunteers are encouraged to come help us and others from the community and area to clean the Suwannee River. The more people who come to help, the more we will be able to accomplish together!

Last year’s cleanup was a huge success, with Suwannee River Rendezvous staff and volunteers able to remove more than 700 pounds of trash from the river. For anyone interested in heading out on the river to help clean up, boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Shuttles will also be provided at no charge for volunteers to get from location to location throughout the cleanup.

Once the cleanup is done, there will be a Costume or Not Dance Party for all volunteers to enjoy as a reward for their hard work throughout the day. The event will feature food and drinks and music by the band Salt Water Cowboys.

Guests can also plan a stay at Suwannee River Rendezvous and enjoy our lodgings for the weekend. With space for families, single volunteers or groups, there’s no shortage of comfortable accommodations to rest after a long day helping to keep the Suwannee River Basin clean.

The History of Convict Spring

More than a hundred years ago, the serene site of Convict Spring looked mighty different, and not just because there were no cars, no planes overhead, no cellphones and certainly no TVs.
Instead, right here at the Suwannee River Rendezvous, if you were taking in the sights, there’s a very high probability you were working on a chain gang.

Convict SpringBack in the early 1900s, our spring was used by Lafayette County’s incarceration system, notes Florida Caves. Their prisoners worked on road construction projects – often called chain gangs – and when it was too late or too far to get the inmates back to the county jail, they would spend the night at remote camps scattered throughout the county, and Convict Springs was one of those remote camps.

It’s hard to imagine grizzled criminals gathered around campfires, the light reflecting in the spring, but history doesn’t lie. Every once in a while, someone will turn up an artifact of one kind or another that further confirms the property’s colorful past.

Convict Spring sits atop a fascinating underwater cave system as well, one we’re certain the convicts didn’t spend any time exploring. This particular cave system is a dangerous one, with a restricted entrance and the need for a side-mounted style of diving through extremely narrow passages, notes Cave Survey in its assessment of the spring.

In 2001, Dell Moats, John Moseley, Michael Poucher and Bill Rennaker swam through Convict Spring Cave to take a full survey. They captured extraordinary video footage showing the beautiful yet dangerous conditions inside the cave. We have DVD footage of their excursion, and in the lodge.

We invite you to come enjoy the spring – from the surface, of course – for swimming during the sultry summertime at Suwannee River Rendezvous. In the evening, over the sound of crickets and frogs, you might just hear the faint rhythm of a chain gang.

Convict Spring is just one of the many amenities and conveniences that makes our resort and campground such a popular destination for visitors from all across the country. To plan your trip, call us today at 386-294-2510.

First Time RV-ing? Check Through this Checklist

Your first time out in an RV can be an exciting one, but also a little confusing if you aren’t sure what exactly to do. At Suwannee River Rendezvous, we come across campers of all levels of experience and know that feeling comfortable in the great outdoors is a vital part of having a fun trip.

So what should first time RVers know before they head out on the open road? Here’s a quick checklist to keep in mind.

First Time RV TipsAsk Questions

When you check in at a campsite, check in with the owners and ask any questions you may have. Often we can give you some insights and a quick rundown of the grounds so that you can get a better understanding of where things are located. We also have a map available online to help you find your way around.

Get Set Up

Once you find your campsite, make sure to prepare your RV for the stay. That includes hooking up electricity and water, along with making sure your RV is parked on flat and level ground. Once you connect your amenities, you’ll be ready for your stay. If this is your first time, be sure to refer to your RV’s owner’s manual, look up instructions online or ask a neighboring RV owner to help with anything that seems confusing. Most RV owners were like you once and may have needed some help learning the ropes, and many people are friendly and may be able to help answer any questions you have.

Relax

This is the most important part! Having an RV allows you to bring all the comforts and luxuries of home to different places. Make sure to bring comfortable chairs, some fun outdoor games and some good food for your trip. Spending your vacation in an RV is incredibly enjoyable. You can enjoy nature and new locations, but also stay comfortable without having to pay for costly hotels.

At Suwannee River Rendezvous, our resort campground offers many great amenities and fun for campers and RVers of all ages. In addition to all there is to do on the grounds, there are a range of additional activities and trips available, including great musical entertainment, canoe and kayak rentals and fishing, hunting and horseback riding opportunities. Movie and Name Games – this will test your and your children’s knowledge of pop culture. You will start by naming a movie for example “Finding Nemo” and then the next person would name a movie that starts with the last letter of the previous movie so a correct answer would be “Oliver and Company”.

You can do the same thing with celebrity names and go on for hours on end.

KanJam – this will get everyone up and out of the lawn chairs and out of the RV. If you have not heard of this game, it is so easy to setup – there are two goals and a Frisbee. The objective of the game is to score 21 points by throwing the Frisbee into the goals. Check out KanJam’s website or watch this video:

Farkle – if you are faced with a rainy day or a cold night and are looking for something that everyone will enjoy indoors, you should try Farkle, it is a dice game where the goal is to be the first player to get 10,000 points. Buy Farkle for your trip now.

RV Vacation Essentials

RV Vacation

RV VacationWith summer not too far away, many families will be hitting the road in their RV for a nice vacation.

It could truly be a great time but if you don’t come prepared your trip might turn into quite the nightmare.

Bedding

Depending on the RV you’re traveling in will depend on what kind of bedding you bring. If it is strictly for traveling, then you will need a sleeping back and even a tent to sleep in. However, if it comes equipped with a bed, then a few sets of sheets should be more than enough.

Cooking Equipment

Again, this depends on what kind of RV you have, but some pots and pans should be able to handle anything you’re going to cook no matter where you do it. Be sure to bring along utensils like can openers and tongs also. If you can’t eat everything you’re bringing with your hands then bring along enough forks, spoons, and knives to last the trip.

Entertainment

Even though it’s a vacation, the travel can become quite redundant and boring after a while. So bringing along items such as board games and sports equipment will help keep things fun and exciting.

Clothing

If you’re traveling the country, be sure to have clothing for any situation you may encounter. Also, be sure to bring enough to last the whole trip as well because running out of fresh clothes will not be fun for you or your fellow travelers.

RV Essentials

Just as if you were traveling by car, it would be smart to bring some automotive essentials with you just in case. Bring a tire gauge, jumper cables, and tools such as wrenches or screwdrivers because out on the road anything could happen.

Suwannee River Rendezvous is a resort & campground in Mayo, Florida, offering a wide variety of attractions and activities to make your vacation great!

When Is Good Age To Start Taking Your Child Fishing

Child Fishing

When Is Good Age To Start Taking Your Child FishingFrom sports to cooking, music to woodworking, there is many activities and hobbies that can help a parent and child to bond over.

The great sport of fishing is something that male and female, young and old can go out and participate in together, all the while getting to know each other and learning the patience and exuberance of the catch.

But when is a good time to introduce your young ones into the family tradition of fishing?

They should be at a certain age that the child is engaged in the act and still find it fun because sometimes it can take a long time for that pesky fish to bite the line.

If the waiting is not understood or accepted by the young child, then the might not enjoy the overall fishing experience.

And the equipment being used, such as a fishing pole, lures, hooks and bait, can be a challenge and dangerous if not properly handled.

That’s why it is important to introduce them to fishing and its etiquette slowly.

By the age of three, many kids have gathered the rules and grasped on its patience, reacting properly to the various situations that might arise.

Helpfully, by the age of three the natural curiosity and the want for inclusion will take over, drawing them into the new adventure and experiences.

At three-years-old your offspring will have a better understanding of fishing from their senses, hearing, seeing, and talking about it. If you show your enthusiasm for the sport, that alone will give them excitement as well to be included.

Show them the good and the bad, not to feel bad if they don’t catch a fish that day and learn that there will be more fish in the sea, lake or river to get the next time they try.

When they do get something to latch onto the hook, show them how special the occasion is and how proud of them you are, putting a cap on the wonderful day you spent with your child.

At Suwannee River Rendezvous, fishing is excellent on the Mayo, Florida river. We have all types of fish to catch and you can enjoy your time with your little ones teaching them the fine art of the catch.

For more information on our fishing activities or reserve a camping or RV vacation, please feel free to contact us today!
